MammoSite™ Radiation Therapy System
The MammoSite™ Radiation Therapy System is a type of internal radiation (brachytherapy). It is an FDA-approved treatment option for select women, generally older women treated by lumpectomy for early stage breast cancer with negative lymph nodes.
What is the special benefit to the patient?
Traditional external beam therapy treats the whole breast whereas MammoSite treats only the tissue adjacent to the surgical site. Targeted treatment reduces potential side effects to healthy tissue. Treatment time is reduced from 6–8 weeks to 5 days.
Studies show that the use of radiation therapy following lumpectomy (as compared to the use of lumpectomy alone) reduces the chance of a local recurrence of breast cancer by 50 percent.
Radiation therapy after lumpectomy is the accepted standard of care.
